The date palm, native to the Middle East, was mentioned in the bible as the "tree of life," and the word "date" comes from the Greek "daktulos," which means "finger." Dates grow in large bunches which can weigh as much as 40 pounds, and large trees will yield more than 1,000 dates each year.

In many countries dates are added to salads, couscous dishes, and curries, but in North America, they're more commonly found in baked desserts and confections. Widely grown in Arab countries, the date is the fruit of the date palm. Dates are sweet and rich with a chewy, sticky texture. Fresh dates are plump and dark brown with a glossy sheen. Dried dates look very similar and it can be hard to tell the difference if you buy them packaged. Dried dates are often coated in syrup to keep them soft and sticky.

Dates can be consumed in both fresh and dried forms. They are sweet with a rich deep flavor and a slightly chewy texture. Though most of the varieties have seeds, pitted dates (dates with seeds removed) are also available. They can be chopped, candied, stuffed and added to various recipes. They are used in several recipes in the Middle East such as stuffed dates, date nut bread, ma’amoul etc. Besides their rich taste, they are a powerhouse of nutrition that can greatly boost your energy. Muslims break their fast with dates in the holy month of Ramadan. They make a great combination of taste and health.
