Fantasy is nothing but the imagination of something which is not real. The role of an artist is to visually depict a subject or scene. Typically, this is done by observing and replicating but artists are given much more creative freedom when working within the realm of fantasy. Where we rely on the artist’s impression of a subject’s appearance that doesn’t exist in the real world. There are many legendary mythical beasts that we’ve heard descriptions of in stories. but it’s the artist who can bring their imagination to life by sharing their interpretations as paintings and illustrations. In today’s inspiration showcase I present 45 magnificent art and design pieces featuring fantasy animals and mythical beasts from a range of talented artists.

This giant bird of prey was so powerful it could snatch elephants right off the pathway. Their wings were so wide it was said they could blot out a mountain and usually they flew their victims to great heights and then dropped them to their dooms. It’s a popular myth with merchants and traveling parties, so perhaps one of your characters could be fearful of them. Always looking at the sky and leaping at shadows that cross their path.
Other imaginary creatures seem to combine familiar animals with things not seen in the woods. The barnyard or the fishing pond. Dragons are a bit like snakes and lizards but often with larger, high-browed heads. The one-eyed giant Cyclops is built something like a human but what inspired a single eye above the nose. Mythmakers had never seen a beast that had only one eye or that breathed fire.
For many years, experts thought such beasts sprang from pure imagination. But researchers have found that the answer is sometimes fossils of extinct animals.
